10 Interesting fast facts about the Cheetah

1) The cheetah is the fastest land animal on the planet. It can reach speeds of up to 120km/h and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 103km/h in just three seconds. The cheetah however cannot endure such high speeds for long durations, usually tiring after a few hundred meters of sprinting.

2) The creature has an enlarged lung and heart allowing it to inhale increased quantities of oxygen. It efficiently processes oxygen during high speed runs breathing up to 150 times per minute.

3) The cheetah cannot roar like other big cats such as the lion or tiger. It does however purr.

4) It possesses semi retractable claws which strengthens its grip during high speed pursuits of prey.

5) It is found mostly in Africa and South Western India. It prefers wide open spaces where it can easily spot, chase down and kill its prey.

6) Female cheetahs mate with multiple males, not settling for just one. It gives birth to approximately three to five cubs after a pregnancy period of three months.

7) The male cheetah often spends its life with other males in groups of two or three but the female prefers to remain alone except during the first eighteen months of a cub?s life when the female will impart survival skills.

The cheetah hunts prey in short rapid bursts of speed. The body temperature of the cheetah becomes so high that it could prove fatal if the cheetah runs at extremely high speeds for prolonged periods of time. For this reason the cheetah is not always successful in catching its prey as it has to rest periodically and regain strength.

9) It used to be a popular pet in ancient Egypt. It also became a popular pet among royalty in India who used them as hunters and as a symbol of exclusivity. Akbar the Great, ruler of the Mughal Empire from 1556 to 1605 reportedly adopted 1000 cheetahs.

10) Cheetahs became extinct in India by 1940 but the government intends to bring back the cheetah by breeding them in captivity.
